The amount of weight a floating shelf can hold varies depending on the quality of installation, the structure of the wall the shelf is attached to, size of the shelf and how the weight is distributed. Your shelf will always be stronger when attached directly to wall studs. Sheetrock anchors can be used for decorative/light use purposes only.
